Hood River is an upscale recreational wonderland nestled on the banks of the mighty Columbia River in the Columbia River Gorge. It’s named after Hood River, which meanders gently through the town. I was fortunate enough to have just spent a weekend in Hood River, and I enjoyed every moment of it. From picturesque views, to hiking, wind surfing, kite boarding, snow skiing, and wine tasting, there is no shortage of wonderful activities to enjoy in the area. These are four fun things to do in Hood River.
Hiking
Hiking is a year-round recreational activity in Hood River. In the summertime you can hike the forest for shade, or in the fall you can enjoy the splendor of the trees changing color. You can go snowshoeing in the winter, or enjoy the fragrance of the budding flowers in the Spring. It’s no wonder people come from all around the world to hike Hood River.
The Columbia River Gorge area has the largest amount of waterfalls in North America, and all around Hood River you will find beautiful trails to discover them. Wahclella Falls is a gorgeous 350-foot waterfall accessible with only a 2 mile hike and only 200 feet of elevation gain. It’s perfect for everyone, young and old, and all ability levels.
Kite Boarding
If you’re looking for something a little more thrilling, take some kite board lessons. You’ll love the feel of the tug of the kite as you speed through the water catching air and zipping through the waves. Please note though, that it’s the type of sport that takes a lot of practice, so you aren’t going to master it in a single weekend. There are many places where you can rent gear and take lessons, so that is probably the best way to start.
Wine Tasting
Hood River is a wine lover’s mecca. There are over a dozen great wineries in the area and it’s a fantastic way to spend the day. Naked Winery and Mt. Hood Winery are a couple of local favorites. Swirl and sip on a glass of Pinot Noir or Chardonnay while enjoying some locally made cheese, or visit the many vineyards and see how the grapes are grown and harvested.
Multnomah Falls
Multnomah Falls is only about 15 miles west of Hood River on I-84 and definitely worth a visit. In fact, it’s the State of Oregon’s number one natural tourist attraction, with over 2.5 million visitors per year marveling at its beauty. The falls drop 620 feet and you can even hike up to the top where the view is magnificent. Stay and relax over lunch in the historic lodge, or just capture that once in a lifetime photo. Regardless, Multnomah Falls always leaves a lasting impression.
Hood River is a charming town filled with great shopping boutiques, wonderful restaurants, and plenty of outdoor activities. It’s a great family friendly vacation destination, anytime of the year. So pack up your sporting gear, and put some fresh batteries in the camera, because you’re going to need it.
